Linda and I signed a building contract today, for about $125K worth of house. This weekend we'll probably go round to various display houses, and take photos of stuff we like. Yay for digital cameras.

Oh yeah, and in nerd news I upgraded my work desktop PC to kernel 2.6.1-rc2. Works great, with only a couple of minor glitches (mouse speed changed, ksysguardd no longer reports disk I/O). Of course, rc3 was released at almost the exact moment I rebooted, which kind of proves the theory that the best way to cause a new kernel version to become available is to upgrade to the current one. I'll be looking forward to upgrading the three machines at home.

Hey, when you take vast amounts of pictures of house stuff, can you put them up somewhere. I've been considering doing something similar (take masses of photos to work out what I want in a house), but hey, if someone else is doing the legwork... ;)

Actually, you might want to see here and here. Note that you certainly won't be able to completely avoid having to trawl display houses, tile and carpet centres, etc. If you're feeling particularly lazy you might be able to get away with doing some of it (particularly choosing house plans and finance) online. Just make sure you see the final product in the flesh before you commit.

Don't forget that it's usually a better idea to determine what you want before ahead of time. Also, being able to talk to somebody who's built before (preferably multiple times) will be terribly helpful, and will likely save you thousands of dollars, eg. by knowing which variations the building is fleecing you blind on.
